Form over Function (+ Good Tip)

The chairs look great but they're pretty cheaply made. Specifically, the black metal that the chair molds mount to are not very firmly attached to the dowels and, furthermore, are actually prone to bending if the chair is sat in too forcefully at the very edge (or, I assume, if someone heavier sits in the chair). Also, the bolts which affix the base to the chair mold seem to be too long for the sockets, resulting in a very unsettling noise whenever sat in (see tip at the bottom). Tightening the bolts only reveals how easily they strip.So, why 4 stars? Well, because they're cheap (you're getting what you pay for) and they look great. Plus, once I tried the tip below, they actually work alright.GOOD TIP: Keep the 8 felt pads that are on the bottom of the chair molds when you take them out of the box (they're used for shipping and usually meant to be discarded). In fact, keep them exactly where they're placed--over the bolt sockets. Cut holes in the felt pads so that you can screw the bolts through the pads and into the sockets. Now, with the pads still there, screw everything in as follows: bolt, washer, black-metal-base, felt pad, white-chair-mold-socket (for lack of better terms). Leaving the felt in place does two things: (1) it adds more height to the bolt sockets (which are deficiently shallow), and (2) provides a squishy layer to stop the metal from rubbing against the plastic whenever someone sits on it, and thus eliminating the terrible noises.

I am very happy with these chairs. They are sturdy and well worth the price paid, and very good replicas. You'd be hard pressed visually to know these were mail order chairs. They were easy to assemble and look very attractive in my mid-century themed dining area. I receive many compliments and would recommend them to others with mid-century tastes on a bad-economy budget.I also purchased 2 of Baston's armchairs, as well, so I have two of the side chairs, and 2 armchairs.My only complaint, resulting in the loss of a star, is that upon assembly, I noticed a minor defect. The legs screw into a pre-drilled chamber on the underside of the chair, and that chamber has a metal "tube" with threads so that the chair legs may be screwed in. One chair had a missing metal tube in one chamber, which meant there were no threads to grip the screw for that leg. I had to tweak it to make it grip by adding some glue and such to that hole, and gravity is such that it gripped and is holding well, but this should not have been necessary if the piece had been inspected before shipping.Other than that, I'm very pleased with the purchase.

These chairs are flimsy. They flex quite a bit leaning back. The screws need to be retightened every now and then. But despite these shortcomings, I ordered a second set, and am equally happy with them. Why? Because they're cheap. They're stylish. They complement the decor of my home very nicely. And if I ever want to update my furnishings, I won't feel guilty replacing these. Because I know as well as you that one day in the not so distant future, all of this trendy mid-century furniture will once again look silly and outdated.I'm thinking about painting a pair, but I'll wait until they get scuffed up a bit.
